Asset Purchase Programme

  • When? Introduced in March 2009; most recent expansion in July 2012
  • How much? Current capacity is GBP 375 billion
  • What? The Bank of England’s quantitative easing programme, which buys assets (mostly UK government bonds) in a bid to stimulate growth.
  • Will it work? Eventually the money must find its way into the economy and boost demand, but so far it seems stuck within banks, rather than being lent out to consumers and businesses.
